President’s Letter: November, 2015

We're into the home stretch for 2015 as well as my term as President of this great Association. It has been a successful year of networking and social events as well as raising money for our scholarship fund. Professionally, I have been humbled at the opportunities that I have had, and I look forward to our elections next month where we will select the slate that will lead us on to new and even more exciting things in 2016.

November luncheon: Of elections and scholarships.

Our luncheon is going to be held next month on Tuesday, November 10th. We have no speakers lined up, instead attendees will be there for two very important things. First, the election of individuals to the Board for 2016. We have one announced candidate running for President and three individuals vying for two available elected positions. I hope all members are in attendance to vote, or you can download the ballot here and submit it to me by email by midnight, November 9th (the day before). Members in attendance will be able to hear from the candidates in person who are seeking your votes, and we hope you will participate in helping to select the people who will chart the course of the association next year.

Second, and equally as important, we will have our scholarship winner(s) present to receive their recognition and our financial contribution to their continuing education. We anticipate having the winners selected by next week and we will have a separate post and announcements notifying you of their names and posting their winning essay answers. Please make an effort to attend; it is a very special event. Again, click here to register.

December holiday luncheon: New venue, same great charity.

With thanks to outgoing IACAC board member Maureen Schmitt, our designated charity again for this year's luncheon will the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Attendees at the luncheon are asked to bring an unwrapped toy. This year's holiday luncheon will be held at Belvedere Events & Banquets on Tuesday, December 8th. Stay tuned for more announcements.

Because this luncheon is a fundraising opportunity for our charitable efforts, we are asking IACAC members for their generosity in providing items for us to raffle off. We have had a variety of great prizes in past years including airline tickets, Blackhawks game tickets, gift baskets, gift cards and many, many more things. Please get in touch with me with items that you would like to donate for this worthy cause; no donation is too small and we are grateful for your help.

We're developing posters for your offices.

At the most recent meeting of the Chicago Air Cargo Congestion Working Group, the carriers and their ground handlers highlighted two things that they believe contributes to congestion. The first is an incredibly high rate of rejections for dangerous goods shipments. When a hazmat shipment is refused, one trucking move turns into three as the cargo must be picked up, brought into compliance and then returned. By one carrier's estimate it adds more than an extra one hundred truck moves per day that could be avoided by having the cargo right to be accepted the first time around.

The second is when truckers are sent to recover cargo that a forwarder hasn't checked to make sure is:

  1. Customs cleared
  2. Fully paid (collect freight charges or terminal charges)
  3. Available

Working with the CCBFA, we are developing posters that we will distribute to our members that you can either print yourselves or we will print a limited number of and you can post in key areas to remind your staff. By doing our part, we can take steps to give every trucking visit to an airline for drop off or pick up the highest chance to succeed.

Membership renewals are coming.

As we approach the end of the year, it is a time to remind everyone that their membership renewals will be forthcoming for 2016. Individual memberships are $50, corporate memberships (allowing for up to two voting members) are $100 plus an extra $30/person. Keep watching your email or snail mail for those renewals.

Remember, we are focused on giving people and companies a voice and representation in and around the airport. Whether with TSA, Customs, IDOT or the airport itself, we want to work to make things smooth for everyone to focus on the job of moving cargo on behalf of their clients.

President’s Letter: October, 2015

Fall baseball: Looking good if you're a fan of the North Siders. Fall football: Looking bad if you're a fan of the local pro team. Fall news on IACAC happenings: Great no matter what sport you love or hate.

IACAC Scholarship submissions: Thank you.

At the time I'm writing this, we have FOUR individuals who submitted applications for our IACAC Scholarship. We put a very heavy marketing push into getting the word out about this opportunity and are very happy to have received these submissions. Olga Lebedyeva, our Scholarship Chairwoman, will be reviewing them and later this month we will notify the winners. Those winners are invited to attend our November monthly luncheon to receive their scholarships. (Sept 30 update - we're up to SIX submissions!) (Oct 1st FINAL COUNT: Eight applications. Thank you so much to everyone who submitted an application for consideration.)

Don't miss Brandon Fried for lunch this month.

He came last October and I personally feel that if he's going to be an annual October fixture, that's fine with me. Brandon Fried is Executive Director of The Airforwarders Association and until he sold his business over a decade ago, he was a practicing air freight forwarder. Brandon now represents and lobbies for air freight forwarders in Washington, DC. Got a problem with TSA nationally? Don't know how to handle the lithium battery issue? Worried about advanced data filing requirements? Brandon is plugged into all of those issues and advocates for them on behalf of AfA members.

He'll be speaking on Tuesday, October 13th and you can go here and register. Even better? He's going to give away a registration to AirCargo 2016; the premier air cargo trade show in North America. Next year, it is being held in June at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix, Arizona.

Come for the networking, stick around to hear about the things that will affect your business in the months to come.

Elections are next month.

Hard as it may be to believe, but November is the month that we elect the board of the IACAC. Individuals wishing to run should contact me or Mitch Estrada for more information and to submit their candidacy. The requirement is that an individual must have been a member in good standing for a minimum of six months prior to the elections, which are held November 10th. Members can submit their ballot in advance of the meeting if they cannot be there in person to cast their votes.

Participating in the board is a very worthwhile activity and one that I've appreciated for the years that I have been involved. We raise money for great causes, we educate the local air cargo community through our luncheons, we provide a platform for sponsors to reach our members and we advocate and represent our members in local air cargo issues.

Rethinking the airline experience.

Occasionally I come across things that are just neat to think about. Recently I came across an article about the agency who has designed interiors of Boeing aircraft since 1946. They asked themselves what an airline that could start from scratch would look like in today's world. No carry-on luggage, premium treatment for whoever gets the dreaded "middle seat" and additional ways to monetize the passenger experience were some of their recommendations.

President’s Letter: September, 2015

Last week felt like fall; this week's supposed to feel like summer. Depending upon what side of town you're from, either your baseball team is making you happy or making you sad. Either way, football starts for real this month and basketball and hockey camps open as we turn our eyes to the 2015-2016 season for our local teams. Last month was busy, the next several months will be busy, so let's cover what is happening and important.

Golf Outing: A success because of all of you.

You can read the whole summary of the golf outing in this post, but know that everyone who came out that day had an awesome time. The weather was great, the golfers had fun, we took a ton of pictures and while the final numbers aren't in yet, we raised a ton of money for our annual scholarships. Speaking of the IACAC Scholarship...

Scholarship applications due at the end of September.

You'll see plenty of reminder emails and posts through our various social media channels, but we've got several thousand dollars in scholarships to give away to students who meet our criteria and submit an application, their transcript and answer our three essay questions. Visit the page we've set up for more information and to download an application.

We're 60 this year. Party with us on the 24th.

Hard to believe but the IACAC has been around since 1955. This year, our 60th, we are going to celebrate with a great event at Belvedere Events & Banquets. For only $35 per person, come join us for our seventies-themed party on Thursday, September 24th. Appetizers will be served and it is a cash bar and we're featuring a DJ who will be cranking out music from 6 - 10 PM. For more information or to download a flier or register for the event, check the page.

We're looking for a few good...board members.

Are you interested in serving on the board of directors of the IACAC? We'd love to have you join us. Members in good standing of the association for the past six months are eligible to run for a seat on the board of directors. Elections are held at our November luncheon. If you are interested in learning more about the Association and the commitments you can expect as a board member, contact me at jim@basicent.com for more information.

Brandon is coming (again)! Seriously; we love Brandon.

Brandon Fried is the Executive Director of the Airforwarders Association, the national trade association for air freight forwarders. He spent many years as one of us, owning his own Adcom Worldwide franchise in Washington, DC, before selling his business. We've had Brandon join us the past several Octobers for "The View from Washington."

It is important to remember that while your membership in IACAC gets you really great local representation for issues that impact us in Chicago, Brandon's group really is focused on things happening at a national and policy level. Don't like the changes to the IACSSP? Got an issue with how lithium battery transport has been handled? Worried about advanced data filing of your inbound and outbound shipments? That is the voice that Brandon and the AfA offer. And it's so easy to join and just $199 for your first year's membership. It is a small investment to protect your business from regulatory changes that could cost you thousands of dollars. Check them out.

President’s Letter: August, 2015

Welcome to August, the dog days of summer. It certainly decided to wait until this last week of July to hit us with the sustained warmth. The heat feels good, though. Makes it feel like summer has finally arrived, even though the calendar said it got here over a month ago.

There are a significant number of things in the works that I want to share with everyone, and we hope that you’re saving space on your calendar and telling your industry friends about them, because they’re important to not just us, but to others as well.

Golf Outing:

You’ve heard me beating the drum for it the past several months and now it’s here in a little over a week and a half. August 11th, 8:00 AM start at the Bridges of Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates. If you don’t book your foursome today, the price goes up from $400 to $500. Single golfers will remain at the $125 per player price.

Can’t join us for golf? Join us for lunch. At only $35, you get an awesome buffet lunch and can join us for a chance to win one of any of a number of amazing prizes donated by our sponsors. Our highlight gifts are three pair of tickets from LAN, Southwest and Air Canada. There are any number of other prizes as well including growlers of beer, tickets to baseball games and other events and locations.

Thanks to all our sponsors for their contributions. Raffle tickets for these items will be on sale during golf and the luncheon and all the proceeds go to benefit our IACAC Scholarship Fund.

Follow this link to register now.

IACAC Scholarship:

Speaking of the scholarship, we are continuing to accept applications. Our scholarship chair, Olga Lebedyeva, did a tremendous job creating the application and coming up with the three questions that we’re looking to have answered with five hundred words per question. So the application requires fifteen hundred words of writing, a transcript and for the application form to be completed. Easy enough.

It’s open to the children and grandchildren of individual and corporate members in good standing. If someone you know is interested but isn’t a member, it is only $50 for an individual membership and $100 for a corporate membership. A small investment for what IACAC can provide you or your company as well as giving your family member a legitimate shot at a scholarship that could be worth thousands of dollars to their continuing college education.

We're going to be promoting this hard these next two months once we're past the golf outing.

Visit this page for more information.

Chicago Air Cargo Working Group:

This week, the working group that was assembled and convened in the wake of the May forum met by teleconference for the first time. Comprised of a great cross section of individuals representing freight forwarders, ground handlers, airlines and truckers, the group is developing a charter and plans their first in-person meeting in late August at Lufthansa. Your IACAC was an integral part in getting this off the ground and has a seat at the table and a voice in what issues are to be discussed.

Remember, if you have ongoing issues with congestion at O’Hare, contact me and we will work to include these issues in the greater agenda to be addressed.

Board E-mail Distribution List:

This month we set up our general email address (info at iacac dot com) as a distribution that goes to all of the board members. So if you send any email to that address, be aware that is sent along to our entire board of directors.

President’s Letter: July, 2015

IACAC Annual Golf Outing

We are only two and half months away for the Annual Golf Outing and we're back at the beautiful Bridges of Poplar Creek in Hoffman Estates on Tuesday, August 11th. It is a best ball tournament with a shotgun start at 08:00. The golf outing raises money for the IACAC Scholarship Fund. We are proud of all the sponsors we have already secured (and their names and logos will be appearing on the website). However, there are still some holes, bridges and blades of grass that are available to be sponsored.

In addition to the money that is raised through registration fees, we have a raffle during the luncheon, the proceeds from which also go to the scholarship fund. We are looking for donations of any kind, including gift cards, bottle of wines or liquor, sporting event or concert tickets, airline tickets, etc.

June Luncheon: DGM Chicago

At an air cargo congestion forum held last Thursday (more on that later), a representative from Swissport indicated that in their Chicago facility, 64% of dangerous goods shipments that are tendered for shipment are refused. At second presentation, fully thirty percent are refused again. It seems that our timing for this particular topic is perfect.

The DGM organization, founded in 1987, is devoted to packing, storage, consulting, classification, and professional training in the field of moving dangerous goods. All of DGM’s activities are performed in accordance with the global safety standards: The rules and regulations of IATA/ICAO – IMO – 49 CFR – ADR – RID, for the safe handling and transport of hazardous goods also referred to as dangerous goods.

DGM are just completing a move into a new building and will be offering new service that will be of interest to the Chicago air cargo community. Please come to Holiday Inn Elk Grove Village on Tuesday, June 9th at 1130 to hear the DGM team speak of the new service and current services.

Air Cargo Congestion Forum

IACAC, along with the Chicago Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association, held a very successful event to begin talking about how to alleviate issues of congestion at cargo handling facilities at O'Hare. Nearly one hundred people attended from freight forwarders, truckers, airlines and ground handlers. A working group is being formed that will meet regularly to start to talk about the challenges we face and work together to find solutions to them.

My thanks to Scott Case of Position : Global, Brandon Fried of The Airforwarders Association, Warren Jones of CNS and Dan Gadow of New Barton Air Cargo Services for their work. Kudos as well to Adam Rod and the City of Chicago's Department of Aviation who provided the room and offered his insights and knowledge on what is happening around the airport.

Well my pick to win the Derby is still running I believe. Thank goodness I didn’t lay down any money. It should be fun to see if American Pharoah will win the Belmont Stakes next weekend.

President’s Letter: May, 2015

IACAC gets out of the starting gate this summer with our May luncheon on May 12. Our guest speaker will be Gina Summerford with Cargolux. Gina has an extensive resume with Cargolux after graduating from University of Alabama, Huntsville, where she studied International Trade. She began her career in 1991 in Huntsville, Alabama, and became Cargolux’s first female loadmaster. She quickly became the operations manager and managed eleven weekly frequencies. In 2005, she moved to Chicago to become the Regional Manager Midwest and grew the frequencies from two weekly to thirteen. Cargolux Airlines Internaitonal , S.A. specializes in international air carriage and is Europe’s largest all cargo airline. Please come out to meet Gina and fellow members of IACAC. Click this link to register.

Congestion Issues Update

In the beginning of April, Jane Sorenson of the Chicago Customs Brokers and Forwarder Association, Scott Case of Position : Global, Brandon Fried of the Airforwarders Association and I have been working with the City of Chicago regarding the current issues at the airport. Jane, Scott and myself will be meeting some of the cargo handlers in two weeks to learn more what can be done to help expedite freight to and from the cargo handlers. If you've got comments or stories, keep leaving them on the blog post that is open for comments.

IACAC Scholarship Update

Do you have a child or grandchild, or are you currently in college or will be attending college in the fall? If so, the IACAC offers a scholarship to current members to help with the cost of college. The applicant must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year program with a GPA 3.00 or higher. The applicant must submit an essay to the scholarship committee. Some examples to put into the essay can be: What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “Future”?; What is the most surprising turn of events you ever experienced? What was the bravest moment of your life? Olga Lebedyeva will speak at the next luncheon to discuss more on the scholarship. Watch this space for more details; we'll get the page up on the site shortly.

Website Credentials Purge

We are working on the member section of the website and are making some changes to the lists. We're updating our process for ensuring that only paid members have access to those areas of the site to which they are entitled, including our membership roster and member rates for our events. As such, in the next month or so we are going to exchange the current users with site access for the most up-to-date, paid list. If for some reason you've still not paid for 2015, get that check to Maureen Schmitt as soon as possible or visit the site and renew.

Golf Outing News

As we come down the stretch towards the golf outing on August 11, we are still seeking hole sponsorships and donations. If you are interested in either one, please reach out to me at jim@basicent.com and let me know if you will like to sponsor a hole or donate or both.

My pick for the Derby is….Mubtaahij

President’s Letter: April, 2015

Who is ready for the weather to break? It seems every year we get a taste in March of 60’s then BAM!, right back to freezing. Hopefully the weather will start warming up for good very soon.

There are many things going on right now impacting our community and I would like to call your attention to two of them that are critically important.

Irving Park & York Road Closure

This month, IDOT took two weekends to close Irving & York to put up overhead beams for the Canadian National tracks. You'll remember that we warned everyone that if there were problems with trucks hitting those beams that IDOT would take drastic measures, including closing the intersection.

IDOT has closed the intersection.

All vehicles are being routed via Touhy Ave to Mannheim Road. IACAC, along with the CCBFA, are talking with the City of Chicago to find solutions alleviate the congestion.

We need your help to find solutions to pickup and drop-off congestion at airlines.

The economy's recovery has been great, and it means more air cargo business for everyone. However, the economy's recovery, plus West Coast port congestion, plus constructions in and around O'Hare have created a complete and utter mess trying to pickup and deliver cargo at airlines.

Police are sending drivers away whose trucks are backed up on Mannheim Road; it is not unusual to wait hours to pickup or drop off cargo. Lockouts are being missed, trucking companies are forced to pay overtime to their drivers and worst of all, service to the community that uses air cargo as an "expeditious" means of shipping is being affected.

We need your help.

Click here to read more and leave comments or suggestions.

We are planning to have a meeting with key stakeholders, including the City of Chicago, the CCBFA and, if necessary, CNS, the Airforwarders Association and the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA) who can help bring everyone to the table to find a solution.

March Madness Networking Draws 80+ Attendees

As we head into the Final Four weekend, three #1 seeds made it through, but everybody's brackets in the early stages were, to say the least, a wreck. I heard on ESPN that only one person in 11.3 million submissions correctly picked the first round outcomes.IACAC March Madness Event

I want to thank everyone who attended the event and made it a success.

April Luncheon Features Wally Deveraux of Southwest Cargo

For those who work with Southwest or who travel the trade show circuit, you know Wally very well. He is the Senior Director of Cargo & Charters for Southwest Airlines. Wally is one of the great people in the industry who understands the business and can articulate Southwest's position as they are growing and expanding their network domestically and internationally. That's right, Southwest flies outside the United States.

Given all the congestion and heartburn that we're facing at O'Hare right now, maybe taking a look to Chicago's other airport makes sense for our businesses.

Looking ahead: August Golf Outing, December Holiday...Luncheon(?)

As you may have noticed on the home page, the IACAC turns sixty years old this year. It has been a remarkable journey and the fact that the organization has remained alive and continuously operating for that long solely with volunteers is something to be proud of.

We've got our August golf outing scheduled and have already been soliciting sponsorships for holes and other things. If you're interested in being a sponsor, it's never too early to commit and get the advertising and messaging that comes with it. For more information, contact either myself or Mark Stoyas for more information.

In December, we're wondering whether or not we should step up our game in honor of this milestone. Some of the ideas being discussed are:

  • Do we do a luncheon, or a dinner?
  • Is it a more formal affair (something just short of black tie)?
  • Do we do it in a hotel ballroom and open it up to a much larger audience?
  • If we go the ballroom route, the tickets will be much more expensive, and will people still attend and support the event?

It goes without saying that we will be continuing our support of the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots drive as well as having our usual raffles of great prizes. Watch for a survey in the next month or two to solicit your feedback.

President’s Letter: March, 2015

March is finally here and we are getting ready for some warmth. Not sure if you are like me, but it just seems that the older I get the longer the winters are. As we all know in Illinois, once winter is over, our next season starts ROAD CONSTRUCTION.

The truck detour route for the York and Irving Park Road construction will commence March 14, not April 1st, like previously mentioned. There will be a height restriction enforced during the construction at 12 ½ feet. During the construction a new railroad track will be installed, pavement removed and replaced at a lower elevation to all the detour route to be lifted sometime in late spring and placing embankment of stone and dirt to relocate the railroad tracks to their final position. If everything goes as planned and without any weather delays or catastrophes the truck detour could be lifted by Memorial Day weekend. For a formal map of the detour route, please go to our website www.iacac.com.

February luncheon recap

Thank you to Mr. Matt Hart, Executive Director of the Illinois Trucking Association, who discussed the outlook of the trucking industry in Illinois at our luncheon on Tuesday, February 10th. Matt brought his insight from Springfield and discussed some issues that are being bounced around from broadening taxes on trucking companies and warehouses and the repeal of the Commercial Distribution Bill under Senate Bill 662/ House Bill 371. Everybody seemed to learn something new who attended this luncheon.

No March luncheon; March Madness instead

There will be no luncheon in March, but we will have an evening event. Join us March 19th from 6 PM -10 PM at the Wyndham Garden Elk Grove Village/O’Hare. This will be a co-sponsored with the Young Freight Forwarders Association (YFFA). Appetizers and soft drinks will be provided and plenty of TV’s to watch the first round of the NCAA tournament. So after a long day of work (or watching the games on a live feed) come join us for some fun, laughs and networking.

Follow this link to register.

Our next luncheon will be Tuesday, April 14th and our guest speaker is Wally Devereaux, Senior Director of Cargo and Charters at Southwest Airlines.

Advertising and sponsorships available on iacac.com and in The Pallet

If you are interested in advertising on the IACAC website or newsletter, please contact us. We have many levels of sponsoring and pricing options to accommodate all budgets.

President’s Letter: February, 2015

As I sit here writing this letter, I cannot believe January is over. Before long, baseball teams will be reporting to spring training. I have a few issues that I would like to call your attention to this month and they're important. At least, after you've shoveled out your respective homes and businesses they are!

February 10th Luncheon: Matt Hart, Illinois Truckers Association.

We are only a week away from having Mr. Matt Hart, the Executive Director of the Illinois Truckers Association, for our luncheon on Tuesday, February 10th. Matt will be sharing his insight on the current climate of the trucking industry regarding the regulations on safety, hours of service, the increasingly shrinking of the driver pool and much more. Matt currently serves as the Region III Chairman of the Trucking Associations Executive Council (TAEC). He was recently named to Congressman Rodney Davis’ Transportation Advisory Board of Directors and also sits on numerous other boards.

The luncheon should be a great insight on the numerous issues that carriers have to face to move freight to/from the airport. Follow this link to register.

AirCargo 2015  - Last Day for Early Bird Discount.

Are you going to AirCargo 2015? AirCargo brings together all actors in the air cargo supply chain in one location to discuss trends, challenges, opportunities and the future of the air cargo industry. Airlines, airport authorities, freight forwarders and expediting companies along with the vendors who support them are all in one place. The conference will be held March 1-3 in “The Big Easy”; New Orleans. This year’s keynote speaker is Jim Crane the owner of the Houston Astros. Most people in the forwarding industry will know Mr. Crane as the person who established Eagle USA Airfreight and later Crane Worldwide.

Save the date - IACAC Golf Outing August 11th.

Save the date August 11, for the Annual IACAC Golf Outing to help fund the IACAC Scholarship. The outing will take place at Bridges of Popular Creek in Hoffman Estates. I am already calling in favors to have better weather than last year!!

IACAC Scholarship Announcement for 2015.

Every summer the IACAC issues a call to submit essays and applications for a scholarship open to individuals or employees of companies who are members. Applications are reviewed and judged by a volunteer panel of IACAC members and then announced at the November luncheon meeting. In 2014, no scholarships where issued out since no person submitted. Please if you know of anybody or have somebody taking higher education classes, please have them submit an essay. If you have any questions or comments, please let the board know.

Stay tuned for more information on March Madness Night!

Have a great February and hope to see you at the luncheon.
